I DON’T know many more times I fucked Jericho, but there wasn’t a

corner of the room I didn’t have him in. There was just enough time for me to shower before I had to be back at the clinic to pick up Kevin. I dropped Jericho off at the corner of a crumbling factory that looked more like a Scottish castle than a place that used to manufacture textiles.

When he pulled me close, I thought he was going to kiss me. I would have let him too. Instead of pressing our mouths together, he rubbed his cheek against my temple, one side, then the other, and licked my cheek.

I’m sure I must have looked pretty shocked, because he laughed a little before he got out.

Jericho said, “If you need me, call.”

I nodded.

Ten minutes later I pulled into the small cramped parking lot of the Clinic. I checked the clock on the dash. It was five minutes till three. Thick gray clouds blocked out the sun and a fresh, hard wind blew, making the bite in the air all the more harsh. I hurried inside.

There was only one person in the waiting area, and he looked Human. If he was Lesser-Bred, I couldn’t tell. I don’t know if the strange knowing had died down like the ability to scent or if he just was what he appeared to be.

A man was at the front desk manning the computer now, darkskinned, light eyes, with a long brown ponytail woven into a braid. He looked up and I gave him my name. After a few keystrokes he told me where to go and waved me into the back.

I didn’t realize how worried I was until I stepped into the narrow hallway and headed to room 6-B. By the time I got there, my palms were sweaty and my stomach was in knots. At least I wasn’t hungry. Thanks to Jericho.

While we’d rested, he’d pulled a cooler out of the small closet near the bathroom, and we ate sandwiches. It might have been bologna or some other kind of deli meat, but I didn’t take time to taste it. I just ate, stuffing my cheeks until they felt like they were going to burst, and then I fought to get it down.

Jericho forced me to chew by pinching off pieces and feeding me bite by bite, but of course it quickly turned into something else all together.

I forced myself to quit thinking about him when I stepped into the room Kevin was supposed to be in.

For a terrifying second all I saw was an empty bed. Then I noticed the partitions. The one on the right was drawn. I went over and pulled it back. Kevin sat cross-legged in the middle of the narrow bed, a coloring book open in front of his knees and a rainbow of wax sticks scattered around on the sheets. He had a blue crayon in one hand, a red in the other, working both at the same time.
